Maria Montessori

Maria Montessori was born on August 31, 1870 in Italy. She was a physician, educator, philosopher, humanitarian and devout Catholic. Best known for her philosophy and the Montessori Schools Atlanta method of education of children from birth to adolescence, her educational method is in use today in thousands of Montessori schools and dozens of teacher education programs in a number of public as well as private schools throughout the world. As the first woman physician to graduate from the University of Rome, Dr. Maria Montessori became involved with education as a doctor treating children labeled as retarded. Montessori Schools Gainesville Then in 1907 she was invited to open a childcare center for the children of desperately poor families in the San Lorenzo slums of Rome. She called it the Casa dei Bambini or “A Children’s House,” and based the program on her observations that young children learn best in a homelike setting, filled with developmentally appropriate materials that provide experiences contributing to the growth of self-motivated, independent learners.
